Microsoft Project 2021, Project 2019 and Project 2016 in comparison
With the introduction of Project 2016, the program brought with it a range of new functions that made it possible to organize collaboration in teams more efficiently. Systematic resources can be requested, approved and blocked until they are needed to ensure their availability. Capacity heat maps have also been introduced to visualize the workload (or overload) of teams and employees, as well as new reports.
MS Project 2019 has simplified the creation of projects, for example by introducing the software's functions in tutorials and helping project managers to select the right templates and tools. The linking of tasks is now much more intuitive via drop-down fields, timelines can be labeled and the progress of tasks is now displayed with the tasks themselves, which makes controlling much easier.
The latest version of Microsoft Project 2021 offers several new functions. Among other things, start and end dates of tasks are automatically filled in based on the dependencies stored, and complex schedules can be better visualized with several integrated timelines. Furthermore, additional templates have been integrated and scheduling has been optimized.
The individual versions are compatible with each other. This means that you can call up and edit a project created in an older version of MS Project in a newer version.
In addition to the listed versions of MS Project, which can be installed and used locally on a computer, Microsoft also offers Project online, a Project version for the web that is sold as a subscription model and incurs monthly costs. Microsoft has also developed a local Project solution, Project Server 2019, which is primarily aimed at large companies and project developers. To use MS Project Server, you need a license and client access licenses (CALs) for each user or device that accesses Project Server.

The Professional Edition enables team collaboration and synchronization via Microsoft SharePoint or Project Online, which is not possible with the Standard Edition. It also lacks the tools included with Professional for easy resource management.
