Remote Desktop Services 2019 User CAL – Clientzugriffslizenz für benutzerbasierte Remote-Desktop-Nutzung

With the Microsoft Remote Desktop Services 2019 User CAL (Client Access Licence), you acquire user-based access rights for a single user to the Remote Desktop Services of Windows Server 2019. This licence forms the essential foundation for a modern, reliable remote access infrastructure and enables a user – regardless of the number of devices used – to access centrally deployed desktops, applications and resources. Perfect for organisations that require a high-performance, on-premises remote desktop infrastructure.

Features

  • User-based remote access: Full access for a user to remote desktop sessions and published applications – regardless of how many devices the user accesses them from.
  • Flexible client usage: Access via the Remote Desktop Client (RDP) from Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, as well as via the HTML5-based web client.
  • Centralised application deployment: Use of RemoteApp to deploy individual applications in full-screen mode or as a window on the end device.
  • Access to the organisation’s own platform: The CAL grants access to a locally operated Windows Server 2019 with the RDS role, which offers server-side integrated protection, high availability and a proven terminal server architecture.

Advantages

  • Cost transparency: Simple, user-based licensing model, ideal when a user accesses the system from multiple devices.
  • Flexibility: Particularly cost-effective for mobile staff, home-office workers or employees with multiple devices.
  • Control and security: Retain data sovereignty within your own local infrastructure; data remains on the server, not on the end device.
  • Reliability: Utilises the tried-and-tested, high-availability RDS architecture of Windows Server 2019.
  • Easy management: Centralised management of all user permissions, session policies and application deployment via RDS Manager.

Areas of application

  • SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises): For the centralised, cost-effective provision of desktops and applications without high-performance end devices.
  • Home workers and mobile staff: For staff who need to securely access corporate resources from various devices and locations.
  • Government agencies and public sector organisations: For data-sovereign operations in compliance with specific compliance and data protection requirements.
  • Educational institutions: For the centralised provision of learning software and working environments for teachers and pupils on any end device.
  • Organisations with a BYOD strategy: For organisations that use employees’ personal devices (Bring Your Own Device) without having to store company data on these devices.

Requirements

  • Base licence: A valid server licence for Windows Server 2019 Standard Edition or Windows Server 2019 Datacenter Edition, plus a Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter CAL for each user.
  • RDS role services: Remote Desktop Services must be installed and configured on Windows Server 2019 (RD Session Host, RD Licensing, optional RD Web Access, RD Gateway and RD Connection Broker).
  • Licence server: A configured RDS licence server (Remote Desktop Licensing) is essential for managing and issuing CALs.
  • Operating system (RDS host): Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter; Windows Server 2022 is also supported as a host, but requires the appropriate Windows Server 2022 RDS CALs.
  • Hardware requirements: Depends on the number of concurrent sessions; as a guideline, we recommend at least 4 GB of RAM per 10 concurrent users, as well as sufficient CPU capacity.
  • Licence type: The CAL is a perpetual licence and grants ongoing access without the need for renewal. Optional Software Assurance offers additional benefits such as upgrade rights and must be renewed separately.
  • Support lifecycle: Windows Server 2019 has been in Extended Support only since January 2024 (until January 2029). Mainstream Support has already expired. For long-term planning, the remaining Extended Support period must be taken into account – early evaluation of newer Windows Server versions is recommended.

Conclusion

The Remote Desktop Services 2019 User CAL is the basic and essential client access licence for any user who needs to access a locally operated Windows Server 2019 with the RDS role enabled. It provides a robust, secure and highly available basis for the centralised delivery of desktops and applications, and thus forms the foundation for a modern, in-house remote access infrastructure. Ideal for organisations that prioritise data control, flexible device usage and predictable, user-based licensing – whilst wishing to strategically plan for Extended Support until January 2029.
