What is the difference between a used SQL Server 2022 licence and the purchase of a new licence?
With a used licence for SQL Server 2022 Standard or Enterprise, you are entitled to the same range of functions and you have the same rights as when purchasing a new licence from Microsoft. The only difference is the price, which is significantly lower for a used licence than for a new licence from the manufacturer.
A comparison of the licences for SQL Server 2022
Microsoft offers SQL Server 2022 in different editions: SQL Server 2022 Developer and SQL Server 2022 Express are free editions with limited functions, SQL Server 2022 Standard and SQL Server 2022 Enterprise must be licensed for a fee in order to operate them.
SQL Server 2022 Standard can be licensed either by cores or on the basis of server and access licences (Client Access Licences, CAL). With the core-based licence model, all processor cores of the server on which SQL Server is running must be licensed. At least four cores must always be licensed per server. Additional access licences are not required with this model.
SQL Server 2022 Standard can also be licensed on a server basis. All virtual or physical instances of the operating system and containers (e.g. Docker) on which SQL Server is executed must be licenced; the number of processor cores is irrelevant. In addition, this variant requires an access licence for each device or user accessing SQL Server.
