Essentials is ideal for small companies that have basic IT requirements and either only have a small IT department or none at all. The installation can be carried out either once physically or once virtually. However, the server in this version is limited to a maximum of one CPU and a maximum of 10 cores. No Client Access Licences (CALs) are required for use, although Microsoft defines a limit of 25 users or 50 devices.
Windows Server Standard is aimed at companies of all sizes that require advanced features but only virtualise their IT to a limited extent. Two virtual operating system environments can be operated with one server licence for Windows Server 2022 Standard - provided that all physical cores of the server are licensed. There is no longer a CPU limit with this version, but CALs for all users or devices that access the server.
The most comprehensive version of Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is suitable for companies that place high demands on IT workloads and work with a large number of virtual systems. It enables an unlimited number of virtualisations and also places no limit on the CPU cores. However, as with the standard edition, these must be licensed via core licences. Users and devices that access Windows Server 2022 Datacenter must also be licensed with CALs.
